The Problem We Were Trying to Solve

We sell industrial B2B products into the German market. Our German customers needed proper instruction videos — assembly guides, product feature walkthroughs, maintenance procedures. The kind of content that reduces support calls and helps customers get full value out of what they have bought.

The obvious solution was to film everything in German. The problem: we do not have a German-speaking presenter on the team. Hiring a professional voice actor and dubbing studio for 6 videos of 2-3 minutes each would have been expensive and slow. And re-filming everything in German was not realistic.

We had already been using ElevenLabs for other AI voiceover work. The question was whether it could handle something this specific — cloning a real person's voice and producing natural-sounding German dubbing for technical industrial content.

The Exact Workflow We Used

Here is the complete process from start to finished German video, in the order we actually did it:

1. Film the videos in English — we used our own marketing camera, edited in Adobe Premiere Pro. Six videos, 2-3 minutes each. Normal production quality, nothing special.
2. Extract the audio track — export the audio from Premiere as a clean WAV or MP3 file. This becomes both the source for voice cloning and the reference for dubbing timing.
3. Clone the voice in ElevenLabs — upload approximately 30 seconds of clean audio from the sales rep speaking clearly. ElevenLabs generates the voice clone from this sample.
4. Upload the video to ElevenLabs Studio — ElevenLabs Studio accepts the video file directly. It transcribes the English audio, translates to German, and generates the dubbed German audio track using the cloned voice.
5. Review and adjust — listen through the dubbed output, check timing and any technical terms that need correction.
6. Export and replace audio in Premiere — swap the original English audio track for the ElevenLabs German dubbed track. Render the final video.

Step 1: Cloning the Voice

This was the part I expected to be the hardest. It was not.

ElevenLabs Instant Voice Cloning — available on the Creator plan — requires a sample of the target voice to generate a clone. We uploaded approximately 30 seconds of clean audio from our sales rep speaking clearly and naturally. No studio recording, no special microphone — just clean audio exported from one of the original videos.

The clone ElevenLabs produced from that 30-second sample was convincing. When we played the dubbed German output to colleagues, nobody thought it sounded artificial or robotic. It retained the natural speaking pace, the slight pauses, the human character of the original voice — but speaking German.

A few things that helped the clone quality:

• Clean audio with no background noise — the cleaner the sample, the better the clone. If your original video has music, background noise, or reverb, isolate a clean section first.
• Natural speech, not scripted reading — a voice speaking naturally clones better than someone reading stiffly from a script
• Consistent volume and pace — avoid sections with coughing, laughter, or sudden volume changes in your sample clip

Step 2: Dubbing in ElevenLabs Studio

ElevenLabs Studio is the part of the platform designed specifically for video dubbing. You upload your video, select the source language (English), select the target language (German), and assign your cloned voice to the speaker track. ElevenLabs then:

• Transcribes the English audio automatically
• Translates the transcript to German
• Generates the German audio using your cloned voice
• Attempts to match the timing of the original speech

For our 2-3 minute product instruction videos, the timing alignment was good. Technical terms translated correctly — which was the thing I was most concerned about. German industrial vocabulary is specific, and I expected ElevenLabs to stumble on product names, component terminology, and measurement specifications. It handled them well.

The Studio interface also lets you review the generated transcript and make corrections before generating the final audio. If a term is translated incorrectly, or a product name gets mangled, you fix it in the text before generating. This review step is worth doing — it takes 5-10 minutes per video and catches anything that needs a manual correction.

The Result
